Modification of the physical environment

Contemporary Occupational Therapy Practice

Author: Barnes, K. J.
Type: Book Section
Year: 1991

The physical barriers of the typical home and work environment are numerous and greatly influence the manner in which individuals are able to perform chosen occupations. Barriers may impede the performance of work, leisure, and self care resulting in lowered self esteem and dependence upon others. Occupational therapists are instrumental in helping indiviuduals overcome these barriers by discussing modification options and assisting in the implementation of their use. These options include personal, social, and physical intervention strategies. This chapter focuses on intervention strategies for the physical environment. The physical, cognitive and perceptual characteristics of the client are important factors in determining the manner in which barriers will be eliminated. However, the most important factors in the selection of intervention strategies are the desires and choices of the individual who will be using them.
