Growth in the proportion of elderly in Hong Kong's population has implications for demands on public services, given that the elderly are more likely to require medical, financial, & personal support. Focus here is on how these needs are met. An emphasis on the community care approach - support given to frail, disabled, or dependent people living in their own homes - has effects on housing & residential provision, women in the labor force, & the quality of life of the elderly. The system of family care is not likely to remain feasible since there will be fewer family members to care for the elderly. Long-term care should offer wide-ranging support services for the elderly & their families in different areas & should be integrated with housing, nutrition, & health services. Without a commitment to community care policies, a bleak future is predicted.
