Abstract:

This paper is designed in three sections, the first section discusses independant living, struggle towards barrier-free society and the "design for all" principle. The second part looks at the needs related to mobility impairement, vision impairement, hearing impairement and people with dementia. The final section outlines how technology can help to compensate for functional limitations, faciliate independant living and can enable older people and people with disabilities to realise their potential.
