This paper reviews family support for frail older Australians and related aged care services. Most of their care is provided by spouses and adult daughters through modified extended family. Rising women's labour force participation is limiting family support, but older people also have increasing financial resources. Policies are reducing provision of residential care while increasing services, particularly for co-resident carers.
