Influence of handrail height and stairway slope on the ability of young and elderly users to generate stabilizing forces and moments

Author: Maki, B. E.
Year: 1984
Type: Report

Abstract:

This study evaluated the effects of changes in handrail design on stairway safety, to develop more appropriate design standards. The experiments include slopes of 41 and 49 degrees. This is an extension to a previous study (Maki and Fernie, 1983), which investigated the influence of handrail height on stairway safety slope of 33 degrees. The two studies are intended to provide a basis for handrail design over a wide range of stairway slopes.
