Improving standards of institutional care

Ageing & Society

Author: Wilkin, D., Mortimore, R. , Munnichs, J.
Year: 1985
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

A review symposium on: (1) DHSS Working Party, Home Life: A Code of Practice for Residential Care (London: Centre for Policy on Ageing, 1984); & (2) Abraham Monk, Leonard W. Kaye, & Howard Litwin, Resolving Grievances in the Nursing Home: A Study of the Ombudsman Program (New York: Columbia U Press, 1984 see listings in IRPSPPD No. 13 ). David Wilkin (U of Manchester, England) finds encouraging the attention these two volumes give to the issues of institutional care for the elderly, the first in a British & the second in a U.S. setting. Both are important contributions to the debate & deserve to be read by international audiences. Roger Mortimore (West Sussex Social Services Dept, England) finds Home Life a thorough & systematic work, though one flawed by its concentration on stating what is good practice rather than what is adequate practice, which makes it less than useful in many situations. Joep Munnichs (U of Nijmegen, Netherlands) feels that Home Life presents a helpful set of general recommendations that can profitably be utilized in the Netherlands.
