A model of aging-related communications needs is presented, which includes cognitive, affective, integrative, & therapeutic needs. Two strategies have been employed to remedy the defects of mass media in meeting these needs: a more balanced aging-related supply in existing communication systems, & the development of complementary communication systems. A 3-year experimental program was conducted by the Mobile Audiovisual Center for the Elderly in Israel to test this second approach. The unit provided services for 3 seasons, 1979-1981, in which 22,209 people participated in a total of 72,803 audiovisual events. Responses of 213 participants provide a basis for evaluating the program as largely successful, though it met different needs for high & low socioeconomic level groups. Implications for future programs of this type are developed.
