Housing with Care: Housing Policies for an Ageing Australia

Ageing International

Author: Roberts, M.
Year: 1997
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

In terms of the aging population & related urban-housing concerns, challenges & policy initiatives unique to the contemporary Australian case are discussed. Geographical & historical factors involved in government-funded housing are recounted, focusing on urban sprawl & the lack of housing choice. Private solutions for housing older people include self-contained units & other accommodations built by entrepreneurs & nonprofit organizations, but availability is limited by affordability. State & federal responses are examined, highlighting the formation of community care groups & programs that offer multiple housing options.
