Abstract:

The housing problems of senior citizens in modern, industrial urban U.S. areas are studied through a theoretical exploration as well as empirical data. Small cities & towns may be most suitable for older people; however, different types of older people have different requirements. A prime requisite is that housing for the elderly provide maximum independence & privacy regardless of whether it is a communal or individual type of dwelling. Only a small part of the aged population needs special medical & social services. The different types of nursing homes in New York City are discussed & especially noted is the Isabella Project in upper Manhattan, a multipurpose center providing a total environment for aging from the time of retirement to death. It contains 231 fully furnished apartments for single or couple occupancy, provides 2 main meals served in the central dining area, & has an infirmary with 114 beds located on 3 separate floors, house cleaning & linen services, & a day center for 250 people drawing from the project & the surrounding community. A Gerontological Research Center & a few "Old Age Homes" cluster around the main building to take in people with chronic physical or psychological problems. The median age for the Isabella Project is 79. The Project comes close to providing an ideal environment for the aged.
