Home Support Services and the Ecology of Aging

Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Author: Monk, A.
Year: 1978
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Title XX proposals of states & localities are giving major emphasis to home support services for the aged, advocating these services as a cheap alternative to institutional care, rather than as intrinsically capable of improving the quality of life of the aged. Familial care should not be overestimated as an alternative to institutional care, which is normally used only as a last resort. Attitudes surrounding the multigeneration household are complex, & vary with specific conditions & types of household. Home support & improvement services offer a means for the elderly to live on their own, as an alternative to both familial & institutional care.
