Home modification and universal design

Smart Technology for Aging, Disability, and Independence the state of the science

Author: Belchoir, P.
Year: 2005
Type: Electronic Book Section

Abstract:

This chapter complements the earlier chapters on smart technology. It discusses the place where much of that technology is used—the home. The basic structure and design of the home can facilitate or inhibit independence. In this chapter, we will discuss two different approaches to making the home environment conducive to maximizing independence: (1) building the home following principles of universal design and (2) adapting existing housing through home modifications.
