Having a place in the community: in search of best practice ... for people with disabilities

Author: Intellectual Disability Services Council,

Abstract:

Over the past decade disabled people have been moving back into the community and living in smaller settings such as boarding houses, hostels, group homes or independent accommodation. This report is an outcome of a research project aimed at determining the best practices in assisting people with disabilities to participate in community life. The study attempted to provide greater understanding about what assists people to develop friendships, have some control over their lives and be involved in some activities with other people in the community. Fourteen people with substantial support needs were visited and information gathered about their living arrangements and community interactions. Suggestions are made to service providers, family and friends on how they can assist and enhance the disabled person's integration into the community.
