As in the rest of the world, Asia is experiencing a "silvering" of its population, with the elderly becoming one of the most rapidly-growing segments of the demographic. In this collection of 18 papers, contributors describe how aging has become different than it once was in Asia, placing it in context, describing economic status in terms of work and retirement, describing living arrangements, family care giving and social support, health and long-term care and community social services. Specific topics include the implications of economic resources in policy; the politics of aging; cultural changes; economic status in China, Japan, Malaysia, and Korea; living arrangements in India, Taiwan, the Philippines and South Korea; health insurance in South Korea and long-term health care for Japan and Singapore; and community social services in China, Australia and Japan.
