Draws on 1994 national in-depth interview data from 22 policy & research experts, as well as focus groups of baby boomers (total N = 32, ages 40-48) in Maryland, to examine retirement needs of the baby boom generation. Experts felt that baby boomers born before 1955 were likely to be in a better financial position than those born later & that boomers will present a greater gap between haves & have nots than current elders, with minorities & women making up a disproportionate number of the latter. They expected boomers to be more likely to continue working after retirement, either by choice or financial need. Findings from the focus groups indicated a desire to retire in their 60s, although part-time jobs were seen as an attractive alternative, & some feared having to continue working out of necessity. Both policymakers & focus groups felt the government should actively encourage retirement planning/savings. Demographic differences & implications of the findings are discussed.
