Four architectural movement studies for the wheelchair and ambulant disabled

Author: Walter, F.
Year: 1971
Type: Book

Abstract:

There are four parts as follows: Part 1 - circulation space; Part 2 - doorway manoeuvres; Part 3 - ramp gradients; Part 4 - disabled drivers and their vehicles. The purpose of the first two parts was to establish a series of comprehensive planning recommendations which would embrace all horizontal space movement activities involved in the general design of buildings. The third study on ramp gradients was to establish criteria for the design of ramp gradients for use by the ambulant disabled and those confined to wheelchairs, including those who were assistant-propelled. The decision to carry out a study on petrol driven tricycles as well as a limited number of four wheeled cars was due in part to adverse publicity about the tricycle in the national press.
