Fieldwork and Measurement Considerations in Surveys of the Oldest Old

Social Indicators Research

Author: Lundberg, O., Thorslund, M.
Year: 1996
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Methodological issues involved with general level-of-living surveys of the oldest old are discussed. Descriptive statistics on living conditions of the elderly (ie, health, economy, housing, & political resources) emerging from surveys can supplement aging research. Drawing on data from a 1992 Swedish level-of-living survey involving 537 elderly, ages 77-98, problematic methodological issues are identified. To achieve low nonresponse rates, a call is made for greater efforts in survey planning & operation. Refined approaches to questionnaire construction & interviewer training are imperative.
