Attitudes & practices regarding caregiving for their aging parents among 14 adult female incest survivors were examined in in-depth interviews. Findings revealed considerable conflict between internalized societal expectations about elder care & the recovery process from childhood incest. Five caregiving avoidance strategies used by the women to balance the opposing needs of their parents & their own recovery process are identified: determined avoidance; remote caregiving; restrained support; "no touch" caregiving; & disengaged caregiving. The data suggest that viewing the family system from a historical perspective allows professionals to better understand daughters' reluctance to provide elder care.
