Costa Rica is economically poor by international standards, but recognized for its commitment to health, education, & welfare. As elsewhere in the Third World, the aging population is increasing, but Costa Rica has responded with a national network of private & public programs for the elderly through the Consejo Nacional de la Tercera Edad (National Council of the Third Age). This national council also represents private nongovernmental organizations concerned with aging, eg, the Costa Rican Gerontological Assoc, which promotes community & family development. Initiatives are increasing at the provincial & local levels to assist the aging population. Community day centers are supported by private & public institutions, but initiated locally. Community social clubs are being formed by local older people or by outside agencies. These efforts are still relatively new, however; a social movement of older people has not yet developed.
