Examines the similar need for community services experienced by children & the elderly to argue for instilling a cross-generational perspective into advocacy efforts. Societal & family structural changes that have made children & older adults more dependent on outside resources are discussed, maintaining that a coalition between advocates for both groups is the only way to diminish schisms & reinforce each others' agendas. Examples are given of numerous programs often viewed as intended exclusively for one age group but in reality assisting young & old alike, eg, Social Security & Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. Challenges presented by the aging baby boom generation are discussed, along with the potential of intergenerational activities to turn crisis into opportunity. The efforts of Generations United, a coalition of advocates for older people & children, to reframe the debate around cross-generational approaches are examined, & suggestions made for ways to overcome the barriers to cooperative efforts for the betterment of all citizens.
