Effects of ageism on individual and health care providers' responses to healthy aging

Health & Social Work

Author: Grant, L. D.
Year: 1996
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Misconceptions about the aging process among health care providers have lessened over recent years; however, ageism is still having a detrimental effect on healthy aging. A review of the literature supports this contention & demonstrates how stereotyping can affect the nature of programs for the elderly. It is argued that for long-lasting change to occur, care providers need to directly target these negative attitudes in themselves, their professional institutions, their clients, & their communities. Suggestions are made for professional development, research, & program planning.
