The older section of the population is increasing in size with implications for private and public transport, including health and safety issues. A particular concern about older drivers and their capabilities involves the cessation of driving. Yet transport mobility is an important feauture of independence and well being for older people. In a socio-medical study of 1000 community residing people aged 65 or older, information was obtained by interview about their means of transport in the previous month. Information was also obtained about driving, cessation of driving, and some of their transport problems. The central conclusion is the need to enable older drivers to continue driving as long as they wish while maintaining safety satndards. They provide transport for themselves and their passengers. However, there is an acute driver safety problem for people with dementia. Pedestrian safety is a major concern for older people especially those with physical limitations.
