Recent research on maltreatment of the elderly in the U.S. is reviewed, focusing on the major study conducted in Mich (Douglass, Richard L., & Noel, Catherine, A Study of Maltreatment of the Elderly and Other Vulnerable Adults, Final Report to the US Administration on Aging & the Michigan Dept of Social Services, Ann Arbor: U of Michigan Press, 1980). Interview & questionnaire data collected from 250 Michigan elderly service providers indicated several relevant abuse categories-both passive & active neglect, verbal/emotional abuse, & physical abuse; hypothesized causal factors appeared to differ for abuse & neglect, with dependence seen as important by lawyers & service practitioners, childhood abuse identified as crucial by police, MDs, & nurses, & life crises & environmental factors selected as central by caseworkers. Further research needed on domestic vs institutional settings is outlined.
