Services for older people in many countries appear to be similar, but there are differences in direction & emphasis. The U.S. & West Germany currently have major economic, social, & political commonalities, but their differing historical development is traced & related to the structure of services they provide for the elderly, the role of professionals in developing these services, & the relative emphasis on primary, secondary, & tertiary prevention. Predictions of future trends in services for the elderly in both countries are also explored.
