Abstract:

An examination of the characteristics of elderly who utilize different types of community services using the 1984 National Health Interview Survey Supplement on Aging. Building on prior service utilization literature, the differential utilization predictors of two types of elderly community services are identified: community-based services, defined as including senior centers, congregate meals, day care, & transportation; & in-home services, eg, homemaker/health aid, visiting nurses, & home-delivered meals. It is hypothesized that the elderly who utilize one, the other, or both service types are differentiated by indicators of demographic characteristics, social support, & functional health. Multinomial logistic analysis is used to model the utilization patterns.
