Depression in older people and its implications in health care

Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation

Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Although depression is not caused by aging, factors associated with aging (ie, physical illness and complicated bereavement) contribute to depression in older persons. The interdependence between physical well-being and mental and emotional health is a critical factor in successful aging, enhancing skills useful in coping with the myriad transitions experienced in the latter part of life. This article addresses myths about aging, predominance of depression in older adults, and treatment considerations (including specific psychiatric treatment for geriatrics). The adult day treatment center description highlights how patients suffering from affective mood disorders can, through structured outpatient groups and oriented services, develop the skills needed to maintain quality of life and reduce inpatient psychiatric admissions.
