The parenting experiences of mothers of adults with intellectual disabilities were examined through survey of the mothers of families in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, & the U.S .(total N = 744). Respondents were age 55+ & the adult children with intellectual disability were ages 15-66. Mothers in all countries were the primary source of direct care & social support for their child, but children in the Republic of Ireland were less functionally & socially dependent on their mother than those in other countries. Mothers in the U.S. used formal services outside the home & made future plans for their adult child to a greater extent than other respondents. U.S. mothers also reported better physical health, larger social support networks, & greater psychological well-being.
