Traditional social work values emphasize the maximization of client self-determination; however, in actual practice it is a difficult ethic to uphold. Here, examined is an orientation toward practice that places consumers at the center of decision making & control. Current trends in the consumer movement are described, noting advances among the aging, disabled, & mental health client populations. A comparison of medical-rehabilitation & independent living paradigms demonstrates fundamental philosophical differences. Suggestions are offered to enhance participation by consumers for direct service workers, administrators & supervisors, & social work educators.
