Church conservatism and services for the elderly

Journal of Religion & Aging

Author: Adams, R. G., Stark, B. J.
Year: 1988
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

An examination of linkages between local churches & the aging social service network, based on data from a 1984/85 mail survey of churches in a southern, primarily rural North Carolina county; completed questionnaires were returned by 79 pastors. Factor & multiple linear regression analyses reveal: (1) the churches offered a wide variety of services, mainly informally, to older adults; (2) socially conservative churches provided fewer services than socially liberal ones; & (3) degree of fundamentalism was not an important predictor of failure to provide nonspiritual services. The implications for the feasibility & design of projects involving collaboration between churches & agencies are discussed.
