Case managing older people with AIDS: bridging systems-recognizing diversity

Journal of Gerontological Social Work

Author: Emlet, C. A.
Year: 1997
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Discusses the support service needs of older persons with AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) drawing on service utilization data to compare persons, ages 50+, with the general client population in an AIDS case management program (total N = 145) in CA. Findings reveal that those ages 50+ were less likely to use emotional support & mental health services than those under age 50. The 15 older clients experienced such problems as caregivers with aging-related problems, aging-related disease processes, difficulty with social support, & disclosure of sexual orientation. It is suggested that emotional & psychological support services for older persons with AIDS may need to be reconfigured to meet their emotional needs.
