Drawing on secondary data, a comparison of the solutions adopted by several EEC countries to deal with their aging populations in the sectors of housing, home care services, & residential & nursing homes shows that a real medico-social policy has been developed only in Denmark & the Netherlands. In France & the U.K., public authorities have certain defined policies that claim to provide overall coverage but have not provided corresponding resources. In Germany & Italy, there is no clearly defined policy. Various factors that may account for these differences are explored.
