Journal of Gerontological Social Work

Author: Neysmith, S. M.
Year: 1988
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Like other industrialised countries, Canada's population is rapidly aging. This pattern is especially marked for those over 80. Legislation, policies, & programs that impact the social welfare of aging Canadians are examined, with particular attention to the role of social services & workers in the field of aging. Current policies, programs, & intervention strategies are critiqued, taking into account the particular historical, geographical, & population characteristics of Canada. Emphasis is placed on the political & economic forces that have shaped services to the elderly. The implication of emerging trends & issues for future directions in social work practice & education are elaborated.
