Autonomy and dependency in an ethic of care for the frail elderly

Journal of Aging & Identity

Author: Polivka, L.
Year: 1997
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

The contemporary literature was reviewed to synthesize research on ethics in long-term care of the frail elderly population with the aim of developing a framework for the critique of long-term care practices. Focus is on balancing the elders' need for autonomy with their increasing dependency. It is contended that services currently available have been driven by cost-containment & cost-effectiveness. Challenging this prevailing, rigid paradigm, a more flexible one is called for that responds to the individual needs of aging people.
