The contemporary literature was reviewed to synthesize research on ethics in long-term care of the frail elderly population with the aim of developing a framework for the critique of long-term care practices. Focus is on balancing the elders' need for autonomy with their increasing dependency. It is contended that services currently available have been driven by cost-containment & cost-effectiveness. Challenging this prevailing, rigid paradigm, a more flexible one is called for that responds to the individual needs of aging people.
