Abstract:

An introduction to a special journal issue in which shelter & service issues for aging populations are examined from international perspectives, particularly those of the U.S. & Western European nations. The two basic approaches to housing & services for the elderly in the U.S. & Europe are discussed: (1) design, construction, & operation of specialized facilities, & (2) provision of support services to address the changing needs of the elderly & retain them in the community. Advantages & disadvantages of both approaches are highlighted.
