Aging: religious sisters facing the future

Women & Politics

Author: Margraff, R. L.
Year: 1986
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Since entry of young women into religious orders has decreased, & life expectancy of women in religious orders is above that of the general U.S. population, many orders are characterized by disproportionately large aged populations. Age structural problems are viewed through five major themes: retirement & value of work; career changes; housing; medical care; & economic concerns. Observations of 840 elderly & retired sisters at 3 congregations are reported & related to these themes. Current problems, attempts being made to resolve them, & key issues for the future are identified.
