Aging, intergenerational support, and social change in Australia

Crossroads in aging

Author: Kendig, H.
Year: 1988
Type: Book Section

Abstract:

Virtually every country seems to have a popular belief that social change is widening generation gaps and leading to increased isoloation and abandonment of the aged. Our Australian findings largely confirm the convincing American evidence to the contrary: ties between the age-groups generally are strong and enduring. The findings are consistent with an exchange theory view of family as the principal arena for organising high levels of unreciprocated informal support between the generations.
