Examines the role of formal human services for the elderly, & ways in which these services have been incorporated into support networks that keep the elderly in the community, using 1982-1987 survey data obtained from an ongoing study of the elderly in MA. Results indicate that formal services were most frequently used by a minority of functionally impaired elders with less informal support. Meals & transportation were the most common services used. Formal services did not work as a substitute, but as a support, for informal services. It is concluded that informal support, despite common beliefs, still plays a prominant role in the lives of the elderly.
