Aging in place: adjusting to late life changes

Journal of Social Behavior & Personality

Author: Klein, H. A.
Year: 1994
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Age-related decrements in health & in physical, sensory, & cognitive capacities sometimes challenge the adjustment & satisfaction of older adults with their long-term community homes. The ability to adapt to & accommodate these changes is described in a functional model. Home satisfaction depends on the individual's fit with the home & on personal & social characteristics. Fit with the home is a function of the limitations imposed by health & by the physical & sensory capacities of individuals in the context of the objective features of their homes; however, objective features of the home can be altered. The model highlights appropriate modes of intervention so that older adults can stay in their homes as long as possible.
