Aging in Nigeria: current and future policy issues in caring for the elderly

Journal of Applied Gerontology

Author: Togonu Bickersteth, F.
Year: 1988
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Current issues relating to the elderly in Nigeria include the marginalization of the rural elderly, inadequate provision & administration of retirement policy, & an increased number of urban elderly destitutes. The expected increase in life expectancy, the concomitant increase in the number & proportion of the old old, & the diminished capacity of the extended family system in caring for the aged suggest the need for an old age policy that ensures economic well-being for the elderly & provides the sociomedical & community support services needed for their welfare.
