This introductory chapter introduces issues and approaches for examining international responses to the pressures of providing family support to older people in the context of social change. Crude categories such as developed or developing countries, or the east and the west are used to chart broad patterns but clearly no country can be typified so neatly when considering family support and policies for support of older people.
