Abstract:

An investigation of adjustments & modifications made by the elderly to their place of residence in response to mobility limitations. Analysis is based on a survey of 364 U.S. households (177 headed by someone age 40+) over 5 waves. The conceptual framework is described, & the results are summarized. Particular focus is on the incidence & dynamics of in-place housing adjustments, dwelling attributes & conditions, living arrangements & social support, & the economic position of householders. Implications for public policy are discussed.
