Aging and health care utilization: new evidence on old fallacies

Abstract:

Rapid growth in the 55+ population during the next 40 years & the concomitant higher per capita utilization of health care will generate increased needs for medical services. However, this need not lead to a cost crisis in health care if per capita rates of utilization in the elderly increase no faster than in the general population; normal economic growth can support health care needs at this level. Published data from several sources favor this conclusion for British Columbia & Manitoba. The implication of this evidence for debates over the policy implications of population aging are examined.
