A discussion of issues of autonomy & decision making with respect to elderly persons. Legal & medical decision-making models for the elderly are examined, & the function of structured classifications such as competency is analyzed. It is suggested that the elderly person's need for autonomy must be balanced with the public policy mandate to provide care for dependent persons. A case study is presented to illustrate the contrast between the medical model of care & adversarial procedures of the legal system.
