Abstract:

Describes the Healthy Older People Program of the South Eastern Sydney (Australia) Area Health Promotion Service, which has adopted a long-term multifaceted approach to improve the quality of life of highly disadvantaged older citizens in insecure accommodations. This work is based on qualitative research undertaken during needs assessment for a health promotion program for older people. The approach utilizes the clients' views & respects their autonomy. Advocacy for policy & environmental change is the principal strategy, working with local, state, & federal governments. Issues addressed in this ongoing project include pedestrian safety, access to fresh food, affordable housing, & health & welfare services.
