Using data from the 1986 & 1991 Health & Activity Limitation Survey (N = 280,000) & the Sept 1991 Survey on Aging & Independence (N = 25,000 individuals, ages 45+), it is shown that support moves constitute about 33% of all moves among the elderly in Canada, but support moves also have consequences in terms of reducing access to friends & generating lower usage of formal services. There is also some evidence that regions with slower economic growth have higher proportions of inmovers who are support movers, which is consistent with a general view that the dynamics of aging result in greater service demands in more disadvantaged areas.
