Abstract:

A home adaptation program offered free-of-charge to elderly clients of three home care service centres in the Montreal area led to installation of 898 modifications in 177 households. Almost half of the modifications were made to bathrooms. The most common modifications included installation of grab bars, shower seats and hand-held showers. These modifications also had the highest utilisation rates. The average cost of the modifications was $185 Canadian per household. Analysis showed that many barriers to functional independence exist in seniors' homes and that the elderly are ready to make use of modifications to facilitate everyday activities.
