Accessibility: the accessible washroom

Status Report - The Quarterly Newsletter on Disability Issues in Alberta

Author: Wickman, R.
Year: 2000
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

This is part three of a four part series on incorporating accessibility during construction and renovation of publicly-used buildings. This article briefly focuses on specific renovation work. An Accessible Washroom Checklist is provided to help design new washroom facilities in order to make recommendations towards renovations. The author believes that too often architects treat barrier-free design as a technical issue to be dealth with only after a design is worked out. The result is often that persons with disabilities are accommodated in a greatly compromised manner.
