Access to health services for rural families caring for a child with a disability

Ourselves In Their Shoes, Association for the Welfare of Child Health 6th National Conference

Author: Sach, S.
Year: 1998
Type: Conference Paper

Abstract:

VicHealth funded a collaborative project between the Association for Children with a Disability and the Royal Children's Hospital to explore ways of improving health outcomes for rural families caring for children with a disability. This paper describes the program which focused on the rural regions of the Grampians and Hume and involved interviews with 20 families. Two case studies are presented and issues raised include: travel and accommodation; outpatient appointments; inpatient issues; and hospital community interface issues. Strategies which may be included in the second stage of the project are briefly considered.
