A Survey of the Unmet Needs of Homebound Elders

Journal of Gerontological Social Work

Author: Vinton, L., Altholz, J., Marcus, M.
Year: 1997
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Survey data are used to explore affordability & accessability of medications & medical care & how nursing home care would be paid when needed among 917 homebound elders in Florida. For 40+% of the sample, paying for physicians' services & medications, as well as locating reliable medical transportation, was problematic at times. A similar proportion did not know where they would turn for assistance if family & friends were unavailable. Although Medicare pays for up to 100 days under certain circumstances, 50+% of the sample projected that Medicare would pay for nursing home care if it were needed. Resolutions adopted by the 1995 White House Conference on Aging & resulting social policy implications are discussed.
