The importance of attending to the person-environment interaction when examining the continuum of housing for the elderly is demonstrated with examples. Some good matches between the person & environment are described in housing for the well-elderly-both age-segregated & community housing. Also described are instances in which the environment appears to have a particular effect on the person, primarily in foster homes, where more frail elderly are found. Even in these homes, the person can have an effect on the microsystem. Caution is urged against generalizing from planned age-segregated housing to community housing for those who are aging in place.
