"Though Much Is Taken": reflections on aging, health, and medical care

The Milbank Memorial Fund Quarterly Health & Society

Author: Fuchs, V. R.
Year: 1984
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

The causes & consequences of major socioeconomic trends concerning the elderly are explored, focusing on the efficacy of Medicare & the formulation of improved health care programs for this population. The number of elderly persons has increased, while their participation in the labor force has declined, & Medicare has not been able to keep up with the corresponding increase in demand for medical services. Recommendations for change include: (1) reevaluation of age 65 as the accepted onset of "old age"; (2) creation of more flexible labor market arrangements to decrease the reliance on mandatory retirement & age-discriminatory practices; & (3) achievement of a social consensus regarding appropriate care of the dying.
